A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDOOR 5’s FUTSAL

The Indoor 5’s Futsal Club began in the early 1980’s under the name of NSW Futsal Association Ltd as the peak state body for futsal in New South Wales. The association continued administering and growing the sport over the following decades from a sport played out of one venue at Revesby NSW, to over 25,000 players from clubs and schools across the state. Growth was achieved by identifying suitable venues and developing local community competitions within those venues. As participation at the venues increased the association encouraged the establishment of an affiliated club structure to assume control of the competitions at each of the venues. As the sport grew the Board of Management recognized that there were two distinct areas within the associations operations. That of administering the sport at the state level as a peak body and, just as importantly, the development of the sport at the club and community level. In 2000 the Board took action to formerly separate the two functions. The Indoor 5s Futsal Club was incorporated to oversee the development of local clubs, centres and school competitions while NSW Futsal Association Ltd retained its responsibilities as the states peak body. In 2003-04, following the release of the Crawford Report into the overall operations of football in Australia, the members of NSW Futsal Association Ltd accepted the Board’s recommendation to transfer state responsibilities for the sport to Football NSW while retaining control of the Indoor 5s Futsal Club with the members. Many of the board members at this time remained with the Indoor 5s Futsal Club and remain there today. Since its incorporation in 2000 indoor 5’s has continued to identify and establish new venues while retaining its own venues and competitions at Sydney University and Ryde Aquatic Centre. Currently they operate at Sydney University four (3) nights a week, Ryde Aquatic Centre (1) night due to limited court availability and at the Camperdown Tennis Centre (1) night and have over 130 teams and 1,000+ registered players participating in these competitions all year round. The majority of the current Board of Indoor 5s Futsal Inc. have all been with the club in various roles since its inception and between them have over 40 years of combined management experience in futsal at club, state and national level. They also have extensive commercial business experience in a variety of fields including Sports Management, Human Resources, Logistics, Sales & Marketing, Project Management, IT and Education.
